New CDC-Funded Training Program Launches to Strengthen Peer Support for Families Impacted by Substance Use

Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), in partnership with Faces & Voices of Recovery, has launched a new training program: Pregnancy, Postpartum, and Early Parenting: Peer Support for Families Impacted by Substance Use. This free, online training program offers 10.5 NADAAC continuing education credits to peer recovery workers. It also equips them with knowledge and practical tools to support pregnant, postpartum, and parenting individuals as they navigate recovery within complex healthcare, legal, and child welfare systems.
Available through Faces & Voices' National Recovery Institute, the program consists of three self-paced courses:
  • Course 1: Pregnancy and Substance Use: A Peer's Role
    • Module 1.1: Is This Your Calling?
    • Module 1.2: Tools, Ethics, and Boundaries
    • Module 1.3: Helping Participants Find Support
  • Course 2: Pregnancy, Parenting, and Substance Use: Navigating Systems
    • Module 2.1: Legal Basics
    • Module 2.2: Healthcare
    • Module 2.3: Child Welfare
  • Course 3: Knowledge to Equip Peers for Each Pregnancy Stage
    • Module 3.1: Family Goals and Reproductive Health
    • Module 3.2: Pregnancy
    • Module 3.3: Birth
    • Module 3.4: Postpartum and Early Parenting
Peer recovery workers are often the trusted first point of contact for individuals who are pregnant or parenting while facing substance use challenges. By equipping peers to share evidence-based information, reduce stigma around substance use during pregnancy, and connect families to appropriate care and resources, this training advances shared public health goals around healthy pregnancies and improved early childhood outcomes.
