Instructor Levels

Instructors have the opportunity to participate in the FHM program at various levels. Instructors in all levels must:

  • Maintain AWHONN membership at all times
  • Follow FHM Program administrative guidelines
  • Teach a minimum of 25% of each course (Intermediate – includes lecture & skills stations)
  • Maintains feedback scores of at least 4 in all areas of content (Instructor Trainers 4.5 in all areas)

 Intermediate Course Instructor

  • Teaches a minimum of two Intermediate Courses within a two-year period.

 Intermediate Course Designated Instructor

  • Teach a minimum of two Intermediate Courses within a two-year period
  • Evaluate a minimum of one Intermediate Course teach back within a two-year period
  • Successfully apply for and is approved for status progression

Advanced Course Instructor

  • Has achieved and maintained Intermediate Course Instructor status (see above)
  • Complete the current edition Advanced Course
  • Present Advanced Course teach back under supervision of Advanced Course Designated or Instructor Trainer
  • Successfully apply and is accepted for status progression
  • Teach a minimum of two Advanced Courses within a 2-year period

Advanced Course Designated Instructor

  • Teach a minimum of two Advanced Courses within a two-year period
  • Teach a minimum of 25% when evaluating teach back courses and remaining in the classroom during the entire courses
  • Evaluate a minimum of one Advanced Course teach back within a two-year period
  • Successfully apply for and is approved for status progression

Intermediate & Advanced Instructor (teach both courses)

  • Teach a minimum of one Intermediate and one Advanced Course within a two-year period

Designated Instructors for both Intermediate and Advanced Courses:

  • Designated Instructor for both Intermediate & Advanced Courses
  • Teach a minimum of one Intermediate and one Advanced Course within a two-year period
  • Evaluate a minimum of one Intermediate or one Advanced Course teach back within a two-year period
  • Teach a minimum of 25% when evaluating teach back courses and remain in the classroom during the entire courses

Instructor Trainers

  • Teach a minimum of one Intermediate and one Advanced Course during a two-year period
  • Teach a minimum of one Intermediate Instructor Course annually
  • Evaluate a minimum of one Intermediate or one Advanced teach back Course within a two-year period
  • Evaluate Instructor Trainer candidate teach back courses

Become an Intermediate Course Instructor

To become an approved Intermediate Course Instructor, you must:

  • Successfully complete the Intermediate Instructor Course.
  • Present your first Intermediate Course as a teach back experience evaluated by an Instructor Trainer or Intermediate Course Designated Instructor. This teach back course must be successfully completed within one year of the Instructor Course and AWHONN full membership must be maintained at all times.

Instructor Candidates & Evaluations

Participants who successfully complete the Intermediate Instructor Course are considered “Instructor Candidates” until successful completion of a teach back Intermediate Course evaluated by an Instructor Trainer or Intermediate Course Designated Instructor.

A Designated Instructor is required to have taught at least 4 Intermediate Courses, maintain 4.0 overall average scores on course evaluations and has been approved by AWHONN headquarters.

 To Maintain Instructor Status

Minimum requirements to maintain Instructor status include:

  • Maintain AWHONN full membership.
  • Teach a minimum of 2 applicable courses over 2 years.
  • Maintain scores of 4.0 or above on a 5.0 scale, calculated from participant evaluations, in each course. This excludes the teach back course.
  • Teach in accordance with the policies and procedures governing the Intermediate Course, as described in the “Instructor Guide” and the Beat Goes On Instructors are responsible for presentation quality.

 

Become an Advanced Course Instructor

Some Intermediate Course Instructors choose to become Advanced Course Instructors as well. Requirements for consideration for progression to this level include having taught a minimum of four Intermediate Courses with feedback scores 4 and above on all elements; ongoing AWHONN full membership and completion of an application for the Advanced Instructor level.
