Washington, DC Area Nurse Receives Writing Award from Clinical Nursing Journal
Dr. Mayri Sagady Leslie Receives 2016 Excellence in Writing Award
Washington, DC, June 13, 2016 – Nursing for Women’s Health, the clinical nursing journal of the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), today presented its Excellence in Writing Award to Mayri Sagady Leslie, EdD, MSN, CNM, for her article entitled, “Perspectives on Implementing Delayed Cord Clamping.” The award was presented at the AWHONN National Convention in Grapevine, Texas.
The Nursing for Women’s Health Excellence in Writing Award honors the first author of an original article published in Nursing for Women’s Health. Criteria for the award include the timeliness and relevancy of the topic; the readability and practicality of the article; and the potential of the article to meet the mission of the journal, which is to inform and enable nurses to provide evidence-based nursing care to women and/or newborns. The award is sponsored by GE Healthcare—Centricity™ Perinatal.
Dr. Leslie is a certified nurse-midwife and an assistant professor and director of the Master’s concentration in nurse-midwifery at George Washington University in Washington, DC. She is the previous director of the nurse-midwifery service and birth center at University of California, San Diego, and has held clinical faculty positions in the nurse-midwifery programs at Georgetown University and Yale School of Nursing.
“Dr. Leslie’s contributions to maternal and infant health are exceptional,” said Nursing for Women’s Health Editor Mary Brucker, PhD, CNM, FACNM, FAAN. “Her article on cord clamping will improve outcomes for newborns across the country.”
Dr. Leslie has been involved in nurse-midwifery practice, education, and research since 1997. She has contributed more than 25 related publications and has presented on the international, national, and regional levels. As a researcher, she has conducted multiple investigations, most recently – the largest study to date on the association of maternal anemia and to infant anemia.

A longtime AWHONN member, Dr. Leslie earned her Doctorate in Education in Human and Organizational Learning from George Washington University, a Master of Science degree in Nursing from Case Western Reserve University, a Certificate of Midwifery from Frontier School of Midwifery, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Antioch University. She is also a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, International Confederation of Midwives, and Sigma Theta Tau.
