WASHINGTON, DC — (May 8, 2020) – In the next 9 months, nearly 3 million expectant moms will give birth to babies born in some of the most stressful and dire circumstances within U.S. hospitals battling COVID-19. In response to a growing concern and need for more education and resources regarding postpartum depression (PPD), especially during pandemic, the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric & Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) is launching a resources-rich microsite for nurses and childbearing families.

“Experts estimate that as many as 50% of postpartum depression cases currently go undiagnosed; this microsite aggregates essential education and information for nurses, new moms and their families,” said AWHONN Interim CEO Kathleen A. Hale, MS, RN, NE-BC. “It is reasonable to expect that as the pandemic may continue, more mothers will birth in isolation or with limited support from the baby’s other parent or family or friends, and that nurses need support, education and tools to support their ongoing patient care.”

The PPD microsite is available at awhonn.org/postpartum-depression. The microsite is made possible through generous support from Pampers®, part of the P&G family. The patient education resources for moms and their families are also available at AWHONN’s Healthy Mom&Baby website at “Postpartum Depression Resources for Moms and Families.”

“At Pampers®, caring for the healthy development of all babies is at the core of who we are. Assisting nurses helping mothers to support a bright beginning for their babies’ lives is a cause we are pleased to support,” says Andre Schulten, P&G Vice President for Baby Care in North America. “We value the evidence-based evidence resources AWHONN provides to nurses that ultimately aid in a healthy recovery for postpartum moms and their newborn’s overall development.”
