DEI Leadership Award

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership (DEILA) Award recognizes an AWHONN member who has exhibited strong leadership and commitment in advancing and advocating evidence-based protocols, research, or practices to combat maternal or newborn health outcome disparities to underserved or underrepresented populations in the U.S.

Recognition and Reimbursement:

Award honorees will each receive a complimentary AWHONN Convention registration, travel stipend, Award  Plaque, and an invitation to the VIP reception with a guest. Travel stipend includes five-night hotel room and tax, full airfare and ground transportation reimbursement, and two days per diem. Additionally, they will receive either a $200 credit for AWHONN’s online store, or a complimentary one-year full membership.

Criteria:

  • Distinguished and accomplished contributions in advancing or advocating evidence-based protocols, research, or practices that combat maternal and newborn health outcome disparities in underserved and underrepresented populations in the U.S.
  • Improve the practice of nursing through a history of strong advocacy and leadership in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion hiring practices within nursing and health care
  • Describe integration of AWHONN’s mission and standards in contributions to women’s and newborns’ health through advocacy efforts
  • Detail leadership role within AWHONN at the national, Section or Chapter level
  • DEI advocacy, support, and excellence in others related to professional growth, development, research, education or leadership.
  • Demonstrates the following leadership attributes:
    • Visionary and passionate regarding AWONN and the health promotion of women and newborns
    • Modeling professional behavior
    • Motivates excellence in others, encouraging opportunities for growth, change, and development
    • Inspires confidence and celebrates the success of others above one’s own
    • Communicates complex ideas in a simplistic manner
    • Lives the message: creativity, resourcefulness, confidence, and passion
    • Welcomes controversy and challenging to reset the standard

Eligibility

  • All applicants must be a registered nurse; current or retired
  • All applicants must be a full AWHONN member for at least years prior to nomination
  • In the year of nomination, full, emeritus or lifetime membership is required
  • The AWHONN Board of Directors, National Committee Chairs, Awards Committee members and AWHONN Staff are ineligible to be considered for any AWHONN award for the duration of their tenure in said position, as well as for two years post-position.

Components Necessary for Completion of Application

  • Nomination by an AWHONN member by Friday, November 17, 2023
  • Application Form completed by the candidate by Friday, December 8, 2023
  • Uploaded current resume/curriculum vitae of candidate
  • Personal essay of 300 words or less from the candidate describing the contribution made in diversity equity and inclusion utilizing delineated criteria
  • Documentation of support; format to be specified in application
  • If selected, a headshot of at least 300 dpi will be required
  • The honoree selected must be available to be a member of the 2025 Awards Committee
