Obstetric Triage Education – Deliver Better Maternal Care Confidently

AWHONN recognizes that properly orienting nurses to the obstetric triage unit promotes patient safety, patient satisfaction, and nurse retention.

Program Overview:

The obstetric triage unit nurse is often a patient’s first point of contact with the birth unit. The triage unit nurse is instrumental in identifying the patient who presents with urgent or emergent conditions and preventing denial and delay in appropriate care. Denial and delay in care are significant contributors to maternal mortality and severe morbidity.

The Obstetric Triage Education course is AWHONN’s first course addressing obstetric triage unit nursing care and is an essential component in a triage unit nurse’s orientation. AWHONN developed the Obstetric Triage Education to assist units in this orientation process.

Ensuring nursing teams can efficiently triage patients is essential and continues to be a priority, especially with the current strains in the health-care system. AWHONN’s Obstetric Triage Education is a comprehensive, self-guided, first-of-its-kind case-based learning program designed to be used by registered nurses orienting to obstetric triage units.  This program can also be used as part of annual or continuing competency for nurses working in obstetric triage units.

  • Unfolding, case-based scenarios focused on common conditions seen in triage units engage nurses to apply what they learn on the job
  • Clinical spotlights in each case build a foundation for critical thinking about the content
  • Knowledge checks test the nurse’s understanding of how her care impacts the patient’s course
  • Posttest  confirms knowledge retention

The course is designed as a self-guided online learning activity to help orient nurses to the obstetric triage unit.  The course includes one introduction modules and five case modules – each focused on a common condition seen on triage units.  The common conditions covered are:

  • Early term labor
  • Rupture of membranes at term
  • Preterm labor
  • Decreased fetal movement
  • Hypertension

Participants will assign a Priority Level using AWHONN’s Maternal Fetal Triage Index (also known as the MFTI) at the outset of each case, explore alternate presentations of the conditions, and analyze their role in escalating care as indicated. AWHONN’s MFTI is foundational for this program. Each case addresses full nursing assessment and report to the provider using Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation technique (also known as SBAR).

Once all modules are completed, the student will have access to the online posttest and participant evaluation.  Participants must pass the posttest with a score of 80% to receive the certificate for contact hours.
