The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) is deeply concerned by the troubling reports of injuries sustained by premature infants at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Our foremost priority is the health, safety, and well-being of patients and families. Incidents of this nature are devastating and erode the trust that families place in healthcare providers. AWHONN strongly advocates for transparency, rigorous investigations, and accountability.

We commend the efforts of law enforcement, hospital administration, and healthcare regulators for their action in addressing these concerns. We also support Henrico Doctors’ Hospital’s decision to stop admitting new patients to their NICU, installing live-streaming video and requiring safety training for caregivers. We urge all healthcare facilities to implement and reinforce policies that ensure a safe environment for their most vulnerable patients.

To the families impacted, our hearts go out to you during this painful time. AWHONN remains committed to advancing the highest standards of nursing care for women, infants, and families.
