The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Joyce K. Edmonds, PhD, MPH, RN, as Editor in Chief of AWHONN’s Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, & Neonatal Nursing (JOGNN). Edmonds began her appointment in January 2022, succeeding former Editor in Chief Nancy K. Lowe, PhD, CNM, FACNM, FAAN, who edited the journal since 2002.
Edmonds is an associate professor at the Boston College, William F. Connell School of Nursing and associate faculty at Ariadne Labs, a joint center for health systems innovation at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. She received an MPH from Oregon Health Sciences University and a PhD from Emory University. Edmonds is also currently the chair of the American Public Health Association, Nursing Section. She has more than 20 years of experience in nursing and public health practice and research focused on maternal and child health outcomes.
Edmonds has a long-standing relationship with JOGNN, having served as a reviewer and then as a member of JOGNN’s Editorial Advisory Board for more than seven years. She brings a unique public health perspective to the role, with a renewed focus on maternal morbidity and mortality, social determinants of health, and the actualization of health equity. She aims to expand the perspectives published in JOGNN to include a greater focus on women’s health across the continuum of care and to increase the discoverability and visibility of the research published in JOGNN.
Speaking about her appointment, Edmonds said, “I am honored to be joining the team of JOGNN as Editor in Chief. It is a highly regarded scientific journal with an impressive history of publishing quality content. I hope to build on the strengths that Nancy Lowe established and work to promote the journal as the first choice of nurse and interdisciplinary scholars for the submission of manuscripts on the care of women, childbearing families, and newborns.”
