WASHINGTON, DC — The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) announced today the receipt of a generous grant from the CDC Foundation, to develop creative solutions to increase understanding of infectious diseases. AWHONN’s work will specifically focus on the effects of maternal and neonatal health from syphilis, cytomegalovirus (CMV), and hepatitis C, and the importance of community health monitoring.
The grant will enable AWHONN to educate nurses, certified women’s health nurse practitioners (WHNP-BC), and certified nurse midwives (CNM) to recognize infectious diseases, community trends in disease prevalence, and assessment and treatment options. Congenital syphilis, CMV, and Hepatitis C may seem familiar but their rise in prevalence and devastating risks to infants make them significant threats to the health of millions. Nurses have the unique opportunity to provide evidence-based care, treatment, and education to their communities. AWHONN will create education delivered through multiple modalities to support the learning needs and preferences of four generations of nurses currently in the workforce. Nurses will have both quick reference materials and deeper dive education to support families in their communities.
The collaboration with the CDC Foundation and the other grantees that include American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM), National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health (NPWH), National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP), reinforces AWHONN’s commitment to advocating for critical issues that impact nursing care to pregnant people and newborns and improve public health outcomes.
This project is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) with financial assistance totaling $59,805 with 100 percent funded by CDC/HHS.
